Ending Child Poverty - everybody's business

Policy Briefing

Alongside measures recently announced in the Budget to support their aim of reducing, and ultimately eliminating, child poverty, the Government has published a report which considers the causes and consequences of child poverty; the costs associated with childhood experiences of poverty, for both individuals and society; the impact of Government action so far; and policy direction for the future.  The report identifies the critical role of local authorities in helping to eradicate child poverty by leading local action, engaging with and harnessing the resources of local communities to increase employment opportunities for all, preventing those at risk from falling into poverty and improving the life chances of children.

Raising Expectations White Paper

Briefing Report

The White Paper Raising Expectations: enabling the system to deliver is a consultation on the reforms proposed to the funding and delivery system for education and training as the participation age is raised to 18. These include the transfer of 7 billion pounds of annual revenue funding to local authorities from the learning and Skills Council (LSC) which is to be wound up. This will greatly increase the styrategic commissioning role of local authorities, and their influence over the future of provision for 14 - 19 year olds.

Care Matters implementation plan  The Department for Children, Schools and Families has published Care Matters: Time to deliver for children in care, an implementation plan following on from the 2007 White Paper which set out proposals to improve outcomes for those who are in care. The key theme is the need for extensive ownership of the corporate parenting role, across not just local authorities but a wide range of other organisations, including health bodies, education services such as schools and colleges, the police, youth and youth justice organisations and the private and voluntary sectors.
